Calvert Hall Announces the Newest Hall of Fame Inductees

John Murtaugh ’61 (posthumously), John Noppinger, Jr. ’64, W. Daniel White ’65, Kenneth Boehl ’72, and Francis Smyth ’78 will be formally inducted on March 21, 2020 at Calvert Hall’s Gala 175 at Towson University’s SECU Arena.



Calvert Hall College High School and President Brother John Kane, FSC, Ed.D. announced today the selection of five inductees to the Calvert Hall - Hall of Fame.

“Established in 1981, the Calvert Hall Alumni Hall of Fame recognizes graduates who represent the ideals and mission of Calvert Hall,” said Joseph Baker ‘76, Chief Administrative Officer. “Members of the Hall of Fame are leaders in their professions and provide service to their communities. They represent a wide-range of professions including – philanthropists, clergy, businessmen, coaches, bankers, teachers, lawyers, doctors, judges, entrepreneurs, and military commanders. With the induction of our newest members at Gala 175, there will be 78 members in Calvert Hall’s Alumni Hall of Fame.”

John Murtaugh ’61 (posthumously), John Noppinger, Jr. ’64, W. Daniel White ’65, Kenneth Boehl ’72, and Francis Smyth ’78 will be formally inducted on March 21, 2020 at Calvert Hall’s Gala 175 at Towson University’s SECU Arena.

“This year’s Hall of Fame class is a wonderful representation of the exceptionalism of so many of our alums” said Br. John. “Each has made significant contributions to their chosen professions and more importantly, each is a great model of our Lasallian values of faith, service and commitment to the community. We could not be prouder to call these fine men graduates of The Hall.”

Murtaugh was involved in intramurals all four years while at Calvert Hall and was also a member of the Bowling team his Sophomore year. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Spanish from the University of Maryland as well as his M.A. in Spanish from Middlebury College and his M.Ed. in Reading from Towson University. Murtaugh served as a faculty member of Calvert Hall for 45 years (1965-2010). Murtaugh was the Chair of the Foreign Language Department from 1973-1982. In 1982, he moved into the Guidance Department earning his certification from Loyola College. In 1985, he was named Director of Guidance, a position he held until his retirement in 2010. In addition to his Guidance Department responsibilities, Murtaugh continued to teach AP Spanish and served as the school’s supervisor of standardized testing and coordinator of the Advanced Placement program. He passed away in May 2017.

Noppinger focused on business courses while Calvert Hall. He spent much of his career in construction and industrial sales in Houston and the Middle East before moving back to the Baltimore area. He joined the Calvert Hall Board of Trustees in 2016 and has been the Chair of the Board’s Facilities Committee since 2017. Noppinger also serves as a Member of the Board’s Executive Committee. In 2014, he made a gift to Calvert Hall for the creation of the John G. Noppinger, Jr. ’64 Commons, the Lucy Hagopian Gardens, and the John G. Noppinger, Jr. ’64 Endowed Chair for Faculty Leadership. In 2018, he made a gift to The Hall for the creation of a greenhouse which serves as the Center for Growth in the Sciences. He also has a Named Scholarship to help students with financial need attend The Hall. Noppinger is a limited partner of several commercial interests including shopping centers, business parks, office buildings, and residential properties.

White was in the advanced class program for all four years and participated in the Benilde Club, the Spirit Club and played on the Lacrosse team in his senior year. After high school, he spent two years on active duty with the U.S. Navy Seabees, including a tour in Vietnam. Subsequent to his military service, he went on to earn a B.S. in Civil Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from Loyola College. He joined Whiting-Turner (WT) in 1969 and began a 47-year career there. Being responsible for many construction projects throughout the United States, he rose through the ranks of Project Engineer, Project Manager and ultimately to Executive Vice President in 2004. At the time of his retirement in 2016, he was a part of the Senior Management Team and a member of the Board of Directors. Throughout his career, he has been very active in the Baltimore area community, currently serving as a Board Member on the Maryland Health and Higher Education Facilities Authority, Notre Dame Preparatory School, Maryland Family Network and Towson University Advisory Board. Many prior community service positions include: adjunct faculty and Board Member for Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering; Chair of the Long Term Planning Committee for the Baltimore Country Club; Chair of the Maryland Family Network Board; member of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce Board; the Downtown Partnership Board; and the Economic Alliance Board. White also served on the Calvert Hall Board of Trustees from 2007-2014.

Boehl was a four-year honor roll student while being involved in the Sportsmen Club, Intramurals, Student Government, Cardinal & Gold Yearbook, Spirit Club, and The Hall Newspaper. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Accounting and his MBA from Loyola College. He began his career at Maryland National Bank and transferred to MBNA America where he became a Senior Vice Chairman. Boehl was an instrumental part of the merger between MBNA America and Bank of America. He serves on the Board, Finance Committee and Advancement Committee at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, New Jersey. He established The Boehl Family Scholarshpi for tuition assistance. He previously served as a Trustee for Loyola University and for Calvert Hall.

Smyth was a four-year honor roll student as well as a four-year member of the lacrosse program (1977 MSA Champions) and club intramurals. He was also a member of the National Honor Society. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree and play lacrosse for four seasons at Princeton University and coached for Loyola University for two years as he earned his MBA from The Sellinger School of Business. Smyth started and was CEO of National Business Archives prior to selling nine years later to Iron Mountain. After helping the transition of Iron Mountain to a public company, Smyth acquired Century Engineering and became the Chief Executive Officer in 1996. As a result of turning the company around, growing the company to four times its size and re-establishing Century as a solid firm in the Mid-Atlantic engineering market, Smyth was selected as an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2008. Through the years, Smyth has served 24 years on the B&O Railroad Museum board and currently serves as the Chairman of the Board; he once served as Board Member and Past President of G.B. Charities for 18 years; was a Board Member for the Unitas Golden Arm Foundation; was a Board Member for AAA/Mid-Atlantic and the Mid-Atlantic Safety Foundation; was a Vice President of the St. Paul’s Board of Trustees for 8 years; served as a board member for Healthcare for the Homeless for 6 years, co-running Comedy Care each year; served as a board member and Vice President of Mount de Sales High School for 18 years; has been the Chairman of the Princeton University Alumni Association Book Award Program for 25 years; and currently serves as the Chairman of the Maryland Technology and Economic Development Corporation (TEDCO).
