The Brother Tom Miller Honors Program was established in memory of Br. Tom Miller, to create a community of students with diverse backgrounds who wish to pursue academic rigor with the goal of becoming life-long learners.
Who was Brother Tom?
Br. Tom Miller was the quintessential life-long learner who took every opportunity to build and enrich his life experiences. In his roles as educator, athletic director, moderator, and mentor, Br. Tom will be long remembered for his compassion and zeal for teaching. Personifying the values of LaSallian education, Br. Tom sought to educate and prepare each student as a whole person for high school, college, and life beyond Calvert Hall. This is the foundation on which this Honors Program is built, to aid in the success of each Honors student.
Tom Fan has taught at Calvert Hall for over 10 years. He holds a Master's Degree in Education from Loyola University. Mr. Fan serves as the Director of the Br. Tom Miller Honors Program, he is Faculty Advisor for the School's Cardinal Branch and is the Head Coach of the Rugby Program. The most enjoyable thing about teaching at CHC is being part of the culture that is Calvert Hall.

"The Bro. Tom program has helped me so much to meet new people, step out of my comfort zone, and expand my horizons."
Each Honors student enters with a distinct and individual record of academic success along with a common desire to be thoroughly challenged. The flexibility of Calvert Hall’s varied curriculum enables each Honors student to craft a class schedule that is academically challenging, personally enriching, and allows him the freedom to pursue his academic passions.
By taking at least three honors classes each year, and with over twenty AP course offerings, Br. Tom Miller Honors students have an advantage when applying to colleges with an emphasis on academic rigor. More importantly, these Honors students will be well suited and prepared to continue their academic excellence beyond Calvert Hall.
Recognizing the development of the “whole” person, this Honors Program presents opportunities for each Honors student to experience a wide range of cultural events, discussions, social occasions, and excursions at the local and regional levels. In some opportunities, Honors Students will be encouraged to compete in local, regional and national level competitions.
Following the model of its namesake, each Honors student develops stronger critical thinking skills and learns to display a keen ability to write as well as a confident level of discussion and public speaking skills. Utilizing a wide and extensive selection of courses, this Honors Program promotes an individualized environment of self-discovery and personal growth, to not only excel but also gain a greater understanding of the world around us. Each student selected for the Brother Tom Miller Honors program will be awarded a Brother Tom Miller Financial Scholarship.
This Honors program’s emphasis on the common pursuit of academic excellence, access to a wide range of academically rigorous courses, and the dedication to educate the whole person produces graduates with an appreciation for learning that goes far beyond their time at Calvert Hall.
