The La Salle Program serves a group of bright, college-bound students with identified reading and/or written language learning disabilities. The goal of the program is to provide direct instruction for skill development while increasing each student’s understanding of his learning strengths and needs as he becomes his own advocate.  A two-pronged approach is vital to enable each student to achieve his potential and be well prepared for college.  Individualized instruction in a 1:1 or 1:2 daily La Salle class targets each student’s reading and writing skill weaknesses. Additional skills addressed include organization, time management, study strategies, SAT/ACT test prep, and assistance with the college selection and application process.

Educational Plans and Progress Assessment

An individualized educational plan is developed yearly to detail each student’s program.  It includes the student’s strengths and weaknesses, long term goals, short term objectives and the accommodations that will be received in his other classes. While there are no course or content modifications made for La Salle students, they receive appropriate accommodations in instructional techniques and/or testing procedures, such as extra time on tests (up to time and a half), help with note taking and differential grading of in-class assignments (content vs. mechanics).  Detailed narrative progress reports are written at the end of each semester.  More frequent updates on student progress can be obtained through the student’s La Salle teacher or through Netclassroom.  To further facilitate implementation of the student’s program, there is ongoing communication between his La Salle and classroom teachers.

Resources for Parents

The La Salle Director and teachers are available by phone, email, or in-person as needed.  Additionally, the La Salle Parents’ Group meets monthly to address issues of mutual concern in an open forum or with guest speakers on a range of topics.  A substantial library of printed and audiovisual materials is also available.
