More affectionally known as, “Tooch”, he has served numerous positions at The Hall including psychology teacher, head basketball coach, and currently, school counselor. Well-respected for his ability to develop his students, mentees, and players, countless individuals have benefited from following the “Amatucci Plan” for time-management and developing study skills. In the classroom and on the court, Amatucci takes great pride in his role as a teacher sharing, “It is all about the boys! I give maximum effort in providing guidance and support as a teacher and a coach.”

Principal Chuck Stembler ’83 believes, “Mark has been a true gift to the Calvert Hall community. He was certainly a successful basketball coach, but his real impact, his legacy, is with the thousands of young people he has helped, supported, and encouraged during his Calvert Hall career. His dedication to our students and has changed their lives. He is one of our icons.”

Known throughout the Baltimore basketball community as “Coach Tooch”, Amatucci compiled an impressive record in two stints as the Cardinals’ head basketball coach. In a three-year span from 1979-1982, Amatucci’s team amassed an impressive 91-5 record while capturing three consecutive Baltimore Catholic League regular season and tournament championships. The 1981-1982 Cardinals were 34-0 and ranked #1 wire to wire by USA Today and Basketball Weekly. This team was recently named by The Baltimore Sun as the most impressive team in the Baltimore Catholic League’s 50 years of existence. Following the 1982 season, Amatucci was named the head coach of Loyola College, now known as Loyola University of Maryland. His college coaching career also includes time spent as an assistant at Washington College (MD) and as head coach of Anne Arundel Community College.

In 1993, Tooch returned to Calvert Hall to earn two MIAA “A” titles. During his head coaching career, Amatucci won 389 games (74% winning percentage). He has coached 50 players who went on to play in the collegiate ranks including multiple NBA players – Duane Ferrell ’84, Juan Dixon ’97, Gary Neal '02, Jack McClinton ’03, Mike Morrison (Loyola College).

During his coaching career, Amatucci was named National High School Coach of the Year by Basketball Weekly in 1982, four-time Baltimore Catholic League Coach of the Year, and two-time Baltimore Metro Coach of the Year. Amatucci was a 2012 inductee into the Baltimore Catholic League Hall of Fame. Calvert Hall dedicated the Alumni Memorial Gymnasium basketball court in Amatucci’s honor, and the Baltimore Catholic League renamed their Defensive Player of the Year award the Mark Amatucci Defensive Player of the Year award. In 2014, Calvert Hall established the Mark Amatucci ’70 Scholarship to provide tuition assistance. Amatucci believes, “Sadly, in our world, there are many people who are deprived of equal opportunity. I have always lent my support to the have nots!”

When asked to describe Mark Amatucci, Calvert Hall President Brother John Kane FSC, Ed.D., shared, “It is difficult to sum up Mark’s contributions to The Hall in a short statement. Many will point to his amazing success as our basketball coach and that is not to be discounted; however, he has also been a valuable member of our counseling department and goes the extra distance to work with young men having the most difficulty. Mark has been and is a true Lasallian upholding the values we hold dear. De La Salle told the first Brothers the greatest thing you can accomplish is to “touch the hearts of the students entrusted to your care”.  Thousands of young men who came through Calvert Hall have had their hearts touched and lives transformed though his dedication, passion caring.”

Amatucci’s last day will be June 11, 2021.
