Carter Martin '16
My name is Carter Martin and I am currently working for the Minnesota Twins Baseball Club as a communications intern with aspirations to elevate into a full-time baseball communications role. I graduated from Calvert Hall in 2016 and the longer I now reflect on my CHC experience, the more grateful I am for all the opportunities that were afforded to me during my four years.
One of the principal reasons I chose to attend CHC was the depth and diversity of its many clubs and extracurricular activities. As an incoming freshman interested in sports, technology and writing, I knew I’d be able to find my place at The Hall, I just didn’t know exactly where. I joined Tech Support Club and the Yearbook Committee, as well as managed Baseball and Volleyball. However, it wasn’t until my senior fall that I joined the Communications Club in its first year, hosted by Director of Communications & Marketing, Mrs. Danielle Hladky.

The Communications Club began as weekly meetings in which our group would discuss things like photography, broadcasting and journalism. Soon enough, those meetings evolved into more experiential learning opportunities, like providing commentary for a CHC basketball game or traveling to a nearby news affiliate to tour its studio. I found myself genuinely enjoying these experiences and, for the first time ever, I felt as though I had a legitimate career path.

Taking part in Communications Club activities, in tandem with managing Varsity Baseball my senior year, enabled me to intertwine all of my main interests seamlessly, guiding my path into college and thus, the professional world. After graduating from CHC in 2016, I attended Elon University in North Carolina where I majored in Sport Management, which fell under the Communications umbrella. There, I joined the sports broadcasting team before ultimately working as a student communications assistant in the athletic department. The depth of knowledge in communications—and specifically sport communications—that I accrued over both high school and college undoubtedly contributed to my professional success. In January of 2021, I accepted an internship position with the Minnesota Twins in the baseball communications department, a role that I hope will be a springboard for the rest of my career.

A major league baseball communications department is responsible for all outward baseball and business communications from a major league organization to its various publics. In other words, we are the official news voice of the team. For instance, if the front office makes a player transaction, it is our responsibility to transmit that news to the media and general public. In addition, our department is the official stat-keeping database of the organization. Some materials that our office produces include press/news releases, daily game notes, media guides and lineup sheets. Thus far, the internship has been incredibly rewarding and I look forward to what the future holds.
