In Memoriam of Br. John Lawless, FSC

It is with great sorrow that Calvert Hall shares with you news regarding the passing on Saturday, February 19, 2022, of former Calvert Hall faculty member, Br. John Lawless, FSC.
Br. John taught at Calvert Hall from 1975-1984 and then again from 2000-2020. He served as the moderator for band as well as Cross Country. Upon his retirement from full-time teaching, he was a fixture in the Math Resource Center tutoring students. He continued tutoring and substitute teaching math classes at The Hall until the age of 89. He was also known for riding his bicycle around campus as well as roller blading and horticulture.

Since 1948, Br. John devoted his life to the Christian Brothers and teaching. After serving as a full-time prefect for two of his four years at St. Francis Vocational (PA), Br. John continued teaching in the Mid-Atlantic Region. In addition to Calvert Hall, he taught at South Hills Catholic High School (PA), Elkins Park Scholasticate (PA), La Salle College (PA), Bishop O’Connell High School (VA), Central Catholic High School (PA), and St. John’s College High School (DC).

His favorite prayer which he used in the classroom came from the Book of Christian Prayer: “My God stands by me; all my trust is in Him. I am confident – unafraid.”

President Br. John Kane, FSC, said, “Brother John was a wonderful example of dedication and passion for education. He made an impact on many during his two stints at Calvert Hall. He loved gardening and took great pride in in the beautiful gardens he kept around the Brothers’ Residence. He will be missed.”

A funeral Mass will be held in Lincroft, New Jersey and there will be a private interment at La Salle Hall Community on Saturday, February 26, 2022. A memorial Mass will be held at Calvert Hall at a date to be later announced.
