In Memoriam of Bernie McGinn

It is with great sorrow that Calvert Hall shares with you news regarding the passing on Monday, January 16, 2017, of former Calvert Hall Faculty member, Mr. Bernie McGinn.

Mr. McGinn began working at Calvert Hall in 1994 and served as the Director of the Academic Resource Center for 21 years. During his time at The Hall, he served as the Varsity Golf Coach and moderator of the Irish Club. He earned his B.A. from the University of Maryland and his J.D. from the University of Baltimore. His son, Michael, is a 1987 graduate of The Hall, and his grandson, Aidan Ritter son of his daughter Karen and son-in-law, Matt Ritter '89, is a member of the Class of 2020. Bernie is also survived by his wife, Ellie, who was a long serving school counselor at Calvert Hall.
Former Principal, Louis Heidrick AFSC, offered, "When Bernie McGinn came to Calvert Hall, he started a second career - a career he found very rewarding. He enjoyed working with the students in the resource center, coaching them on the golf course and attending their games and events. In addition to his service to the students, he was also instrumental in keeping faculty morale very upbeat as he planned faculty golf outings, faculty socials and generally volunteered where needed. He was a true Lasallian. May he rest in peace."

John Thaler AFSC, long-time CHC Faculty member, shared, "Bernie was a man of great faith. He lived life to the fullest. He was everyone's friend." Joseph Baker '76, Faculty member and Director of Advancement, remarked, "Bernie brought a great spirit to his work. He took a personal interest in each student with whom he worked."

Mr. McGinn donated his body to science. A memorial mass will be held at Calvert Hall on Saturday, February 11, 2017 beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the McManus Theatre of The Marion Burk Knott Center.
