It is with great sorrow that Calvert Hall shares with you news regarding the passing on Thursday, May 11, 2017, of former Calvert Hall Faculty member, Mr. John T. "Jack" Murtaugh '61.

Jack joined the Calvert Hall faculty midway through the 1965-66 school year as a teacher of Spanish immediately following his graduation from the University of Maryland. During his first decade at Calvert Hall, he also earned a M.A. in Spanish from Middlebury College in Vermont and a M.Ed. in Reading from Towson State College. Jack served as Chairman of the Language Department from 1973-1982 when he moved into the Guidance Department, earning his certification from Loyola College.
In 1985, he was named Director of Guidance, a position he held until his retirement in 2010. In addition to his Guidance Department duties. Jack continued to teach AP Spanish and also served as the school’s supervisor of standardized testing and coordinator of the Advanced Placement program. In retirement, Jack enjoyed attending Calvert Hall games, alumni activities, and other social events with former students and faculty colleagues. Jack once summed up his career at The Hall in the following way: “As a student and faculty member nearly 50 years of my life were spent at Calvert Hall. I had the opportunity to work under seven Principals and four Presidents. I was fortunate to have taught and known thousands of the finest young men on the planet, and I have established and maintained lifetime friendships with outstanding faculty colleagues."
Foreign Language Chair, Catherine Thomas, offered, “Jack was a man with such positive energy and spirit.  He took a personal interest in each of the students he worked with as a teacher and counselor.  His zeal for teaching was infectious.  Jack was a great mentor to me.  As a young teacher, he taught me essential techniques in instruction; techniques I still apply daily in the classroom.”

Brother John Kane FSC, Ed.D., President of Calvert Hall, shared,
"The Calvert Hall community is deeply saddened with the loss of Jack. For 46 years Jack touched the hearts of thousands of young men as a teacher of Spanish and later as a Counselor. Jack knew everybody and could remember everybody. In addition to his excellence in teaching and Guidance, Jack was a great mentor to many new teachers and counselors. He will be greatly missed by so many, and our love and support go out to Marlene and his family."

A memorial ceremony will be held at Calvert Hall on Saturday, June 10, 2017, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
