Alumni & Faculty 'Ride to Victory' for CHC teacher Suzanne Thompson

Ed Walker '83, David Cohen '87, CHC faculty member Susan Grzech, and Don Sheehan rode over 130 miles in 2 days to raise awareness and donations for cancer research as well as to support LaSalle Program teacher, Suzanne Thompson.

Calvert Hall is not just a school -- it is a community. It was a little over a year ago that, Suzanne Thompson a teacher in the LaSalle Program at Calvert Hall, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. She continues to receive her treatments at the Johns Hopkins Sydney Kimmel Cancer Center at Bayview. Her husband, Brian Thompson, noticed a brochure in the waiting room advertising a fundraising event for cancer research. The brochure described the event as a “Ride to Victory” to help find a cure for cancer benefiting three regional hospitals: Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, Sibley Memorial and Suburban Hospital. Both Suzanne and Brian thought this would be a great way to give back for all that has been given to them. The fact that 100% of all money raised went directly to research convinced them to get involved.

Brian Thompson immediately reached out to the business community. Thanks to Ed Walker ’83 at TransAmerica Insurance Companies, the team was able to secure a $10,000.00 donation for four riders, as well as providing racing gear (kits) for Team TransAmerica.

Brian and Suzanne then solicited the help of friends. Susan Grzech (Calvert Hall teacher), who is an enthusiastic runner and bike rider, agreed to ride for her friend and co-worker. Team TransAmerica consisted of Ed Walker ’83 (Team Captain), David Cohen ’87, Susan Grzech, and Don Sheehan. On September 19 & 20, they rode their bikes approximately 130 miles over 2 days from RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, to Mount Airy, MD, and back. Over 500 riders participated and $2.1 million was raised. This selfless act of giving back continues to resonate throughout the Calvert Hall community and beyond.

Kudos to Team TransAmerica and their amazing effort to raise awareness and funding for “The Cure”!
