McMullen Scholars Program
The McMullen Scholars Program is a highly competitive integrated program of study that provides a well-rounded education to select students at Calvert Hall College.
The program provides an experience that challenges and stimulates students through rigorous coursework, unique cultural and academic field experiences, and original research opportunities. Students engage the accelerated content of Honors and Advanced Placement courses in English, Social Studies, Classical and Modern Languages, Mathematics, and Science. In addition, Scholars are required to take additional courses in Rhetoric and Logic as well as the Humanities.

Becoming a McMullen Scholar
Enrollment in the McMullen Scholars Program is limited. Candidates with a strong admissions portfolio (middle school grades, test scores, and recommendations) will be invited to interview with the Principal and the Program Director. Candidates must demonstrate high general intellectual ability as well as specific high-level ability in the verbal, mathematical, and language skills areas on the Archdiocesan High School Placement test and a standardized test taken within the last two years. Once invited to apply, those students who pursue a place in the Program will be interviewed by the Principal and the Program Director. Invitations to enter the McMullen Scholars Program are based on the above criteria and the interview.
Benefits to becoming a McMullen Scholar
Scholars enjoy the following benefits from participation in the program:- A full-time Program Director and dedicated faculty members who act as mentors and advisers to the scholars on an individual basis
- A curriculum that prepares scholars to succeed in the most rigorous institutions of higher learning
- Use of the McMullen Center for individual or group study and research
- Opportunities for field experiences and cultural enrichment during each academic year
- The substantial support of a peer group committed to similar goals of personal excellence and intellectual growth
- Designation as a McMullen Scholar at Commencement and identification of the program and its requirements on all college applications
Requirements
To achieve the program’s objectives, scholars are expected to meet the following requirements:- Maintain an Honors or Advanced Placement level of study in at least three subject areas during each academic year.
- Take Honors Rhetoric and Logic in the freshmen year.
- Take Humanities in the sophomore or junior year.
- Participate in an assigned number of field experiences and cultural enrichment opportunities in each academic year.
- Plan and execute the McMullen Capstone Experience in a subject area of the scholar’s choosing. This is done in accordance with the McMullen Capstone Experience Syllabus and in consultation with the McMullen Program Director.
Capstones
The program culminates with the McMullen Capstone Experience, a substantial, independent, research-based project within a discipline of deep personal interest to the scholar. Mentorship within the Capstone Experience includes personal contact with professional experts in their field, individualized support during the university discernment and application process, and analysis of potential career interests. During their final semester at Calvert Hall, scholars offer an oral and visual presentation of their Capstone to a large audience.
