Vocal Music

“The only thing better than singing is more singing” – Ella Fitzgerald
The Calvert Hall Vocal Music Program empowers young men to grow as confident, disciplined, and well-rounded students, and collaborative musicians.  Through our dynamic and comprehensive curriculum, students build strong skills in vocal technique, music literacy, and expression—while gaining meaningful performance experience both on and off campus.

Whether you are an experienced singer or just beginning your musical journey, our program offers a supportive and challenging environment where you can thrive, belong, and excel within a brotherhood of song.  New students will find themselves immediately plugged into a caring community.

We invite you to discover the energy, Brotherhood, and artistry of our music—come experience The Hallmen sound for yourself at one of our performances!

Performance dates can be found on The Arts at Calvert Hall page and on the school calendar.  Please call 410-825-4266 ext. 149 or email Timothy Keatley, Director of Vocal Music, for additional information.

  • The Hallmen Chorus

This large choir (40-50) consists primarily of juniors and seniors with prior singing experience. The group participates in the Men’s Choir division at festivals, and their repertoire consists of large accompanied and A Capella works written for men’s choirs. They sing at many special functions (Turkey Bowl, Open House, etc.) and are the featured choral ensemble for the Christmas and Spring Concerts. The group also participates in the annual AIMS Choral Festival and district and state assessments and often combines with local all-girls’ schools for mixed choir concerts. The Hallmen are open to all voices by audition.
  • Chamber Chorus

The Chamber Singers are the core group of singers for the Calvert Hall Choral Department. They are invited from the Hallmen Chorus by the director, regardless of grade, to perform advanced (Level 5-6) classical a cappella music ranging from classical to modern. A fairly high level of music reading skills is a pre-requisite. The group participates in the annual AIMS Choral Festival, district and state assessments, and smaller venues in the area. These singers act as peer educators to the younger or less experienced singers.
  • Madrigal Singers

This ensemble consists of mostly juniors and seniors from The Hallmen Chorus who have considerable singing experience. Their repertoire consists of advanced A Cappella works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. They sing annually at the state and district Solo and Ensemble Festivals, as well as at other concerts.
  • The Corridors

This auditioned A Cappella choir with vocal percussion consists of mostly juniors and seniors from The Hallmen Chorus who have considerable singing experience and the ability to sing pop music. This group competes in the Vocal Jazz/Show division at festivals, A Cappella-fest at Park School, and in the International Competition of High School A Cappella. They also perform at the Christmas Concert and the Jazz Showcase. Their repertoire consists of a cappella contemporary works for men’s choir. Student arrangements, choreography and movement are strongly encouraged.
  • Solo Vocal Music

The Solo Vocal Music course is designed to provide students of all levels of proficiency with the opportunity to build singing technique through the study of various solo vocal repertoire including, but not limited to, classical and musical theatre genres.  The course would include performances at various choral concerts, at recitals, in the annual Chamber Ensemble Concert, at the District and State Festivals, and at the National Association of Teachers of Singing student auditions.
