The Calvert Hall Cardinals entered Friday night at St. Maria Goretti needing a victory to earn the Baltimore Catholic League Championship. A win would make the Cardinals 11-3 in Catholic League play and would make them co-champions with John Carroll who has the same record. For the first 12 minutes it looked like the Cardinasl were going to cruise to a victory as they opened up a 23-10 lead on the Gaels. But an 11-0 run by Goretti tightened things up and the Hall only led 26-25 at the half. The second saw a very tight battle and the lead changed hands 4 times in the final 3 minutes of the contest. After a free throw with 33 seconds remaining the Cardinals took a 1 point lead but St. Maria Goretti countered with two made free throws to take a 1 point lead with 12 seconds remaining. The Hall inbounded the ball and took a long jumpshot which was rebounded by the Cardinals for a basket as time expired. The buzzer beater runs the Hall's recored to 24-5 overall. Calvert Hall will open up the MIAA playoffs with a home game on Thursday 2/12 at 7pm.
