Cardinals surge past Boys' Latin to stay undefeated

For six holes on a chilly, drizzly Thursday afternoon, Calvert Hall found itself locked in a duel with winless Boys' Latin, and on the Cardinals' home course no less.  But a swift turnaround on the final six holes helped pave the way for a 16-5 win on Thursday afternoon, improving Calvert Hall's record to 4-0 on the season, including 3-0 at the Country Club of Maryland.

With senior co-captain Kevin May away a on school-related trip, Calvert Hall shuffled its lineup for the showdown with Boys' Latin.  In the 1-2 pairing, co-captain Paul Schwing (one half point individually) and junior Charles Carter (2.5 points) won the coveted team point when Carter rolled in an 8-foot birdie putt on the 12th and final hole.  Right behind them, Doug Grem (2 points) and Jimmy Workmeister (2 points) also won the team point and claimed 5 of the 7 available points overall.  In the final pairing, #5 Finn McGinnis and #6 Ryan Camille swept their three individual points each and they also captured the team point for a final score of 16-5.

"I feel like I say this after just about every match, but it's true," said CHC golf coach Drew Forrester after the match.  "These matches all come down to the final three holes.  We played those holes very well today and that was the difference in the outcome.  Boys' Latin played some outstanding golf, particularly early on, and made us earn that win today."

Forrester noted the team's ability to win at home remains a critical focal point for the team.  "We're very commited to playing really good golf at our home course," he stated.  "Our goal is to play at home in the playoffs.  We know we have to earn that right and that's what we're doing right now with our 4-0 start."

The Cardinals have a pair of tough A-Conference matches next week, as Calvert Hall travels to Archbishop Spalding for a 3:30 pm match on Monday, April 13 at the Naval Academy golf course in Annapolis.  Wednesday, April 15, the Cardinals host McDonogh at 3:15 pm.
