Fellow Hallmen, my name is Isaac Hawkins ’22, and I am a rising sophomore at Georgetown University majoring in International Politics in the School of Foreign Service. This summer, I interned with the Baltimore County 4-H office, an extension of the University of Maryland. In my role as a supervisor for the 4-H Summer Youth Program, I traveled to senior centers in Towson, Parkville, Reisterstown, Randallstown, Dundalk, and Monkton to assist high school students who are providing in-person tech support to seniors. We also offer zoom tech support. Throughout the six-week run of the program we have helped hundreds of senior citizens increase their internet literacy. The in-person tech support at the senior centers has been so rewarding to see the students engage with the seniors. It has allowed me to introduce modern technology to the older population in the county.
In addition to the tech support, we have created a series of podcasts for farmers in collaboration with the University of Maryland Office on Agricultural Law. The internship has provided me with opportunities to strengthen my communication and leadership skills. These skills were developed at Calvert Hall.
While at Calvert Hall, I was a McMullen scholar, a member of the Wind and Woodwind Ensembles and the Its Academic team. During my time at Georgetown, I have found that Calvert Hall has prepared me well for the challenges that I face in college. There are significant differences between high school and college, but The Hall ensured that my transition to college was easy. Time management and the newfound freedom proves troublesome for some freshmen. Responsible time usage and management was something I learned in freshman year at The Hall. I went into college with a working knowledge of how much work could be done between classes and how to effectively use free time throughout the day. Calvert Hall taught me the importance of using a planner especially when I have long-term projects for class. The Hall taught me that one’s planner is their best friend, and Georgetown has reinforced this message. With an array of long-term assignments for different classes, it is important to write down deadlines and self-progress checks. Both of which are skills I learned as a high school sophomore. These time management and planning skills have provided with me with the tools to be successful in college, in my internships and beyond.
