Champions in Charleston

Calvert Hall traveled to Charleston for the Christmas break and took place in the Rotary Roundball Classic at North Charleston High School.  In the opening round the Cardinals used a strong first half to take control vs. Pinewood Prep out of North Carolina that enabled the Cards to cruise to a 71-56 win in round one.

The Hall took on Gaston Day School out of North Carolina in the semifinals on Monday night.  Gaston Day came out strong and used a barrage of 3 pointers to take an early 18-10 lead.  The Cards cut the lead to 2 by the half as they tighened up their defense and began to score in transition.  The second half was another see saw battle, the Hall opened up a 7 point lead mid way through the second half only to see Gaston Day come right back and tie the game.  However, the Cardinals strung together 4 consecutive stops to close the game and converted each one into easy buckets.  The Cardinals advanced with a 71-62 victory.

The Hall's semifinal victory set up a championship matchup with Linwood High School, who is the #5 ranked team in New Jersey.  The Cardinals came out determined on the defensive end at took a 32-22 halftime lead.  Linwood used an early second half run to cut the lead to 3 but the Hall bounced right back and held an 11 point lead with 3:44 to play.  However, Linwood closed the game on a 14-3 lead to send the game to overtime.  The Hall held a 3 point lead with 13 seconds left in the first OT only to see Linwood hit an NBA range 3 to tie the game again!  The second OT was a back and forth battle and the lead changed hands numerous times in the final minute.  Calvert Hall hit a 3 with 20 seconds left to take a one point lead but the Cards were whistled for a foul with 1.8 seconds remaining.  The Linwood point guard comely sank the first free throw to tie the game but missed the second, the Hall quickly rebounded the ball and outletted it to half court where they were fouled on a last second attempt.  Calvert Hall missed the first two free throws but made the final one to seal the championship 79-78.

The Cardinals come home with a 13-2 overall record and will be back in action at MSJ on Sunday at 3:30pm.
