Calvert Hall kicked off the long-awaited 2015 MIAA A-Conference Golf season with a 16-5 win over visiting Loyola on Wednesday, March 25 at Country Club of Maryland. The victory marked the third straight season the Cardinals started their campaign with a win under head coach Drew Forrester. The match was played in cold, overcast conditions, with temperatures in the high 30's.
"We talked during our trip to Pinehurst last weekend about the importance of getting off to a good start in the opening match," says Forrester. "It's so important to win your home matches in the MIAA. Those road wins are tough to come by because every team is competitive and has significant home-course knowledge. That makes it even more important that you win at home."
Senior captains Kevin May and Paul Schwing swept all seven of their available points, as each player won his three individual points and the two teamed up for a 3-up win in the 12-hole "team point". Junior newcomer Charles Carter collected 2.5 points, while senior Jimmy Workmeister won his last two holes to earn a half-point on the "back six". Senior Doug Grem and sophomore Finn McGinnis teamed up for a team point victory, with Grem earning 2.5 individual points while McGinnis produced 2 points on the day.
"It was great to see every player contribute and play well," Forrester remarked afterwards. "We literally had everyone in the lineup get points and winning 2.5 of the 3 available team points showed the players gelled well together."
The Cardinals made eight birdies on the day, as Grem, McGinnis and Schwing had two each.
Calvert Hall returns to A-Conference action on Monday, March 30 with their first road match of the season at Rolling Road GC vs. Mount Saint Joseph. The Cardinals' next home contest is Wednesday, April 1 vs. St. Paul's at Country Club of Maryland (3:15 pm).
