Cardinals fall to 4-1 with loss at Spalding

Going into the Monday, April 13 match at the Naval Academy Golf Club, the Cardinals knew they'd have to play their very best to defeat host Archbishop Spalding.  After all, the Cavaliers last lost a conference match in the 2013 playoffs and cruised through the regular season and post-season in 2014 with a perfect 9-0 record.  This year, they were 1-0 heading into the showdown with Calvert Hall on Monday afternoon.

Calvert Hall started strong and the 1-2 pairing of Kevin May and Doug Grem took the two highly recruited Spalding 1-2 team right down to the final putt on the front six, with May losing his point by virtue of a bogey five and Grem securing a half point on the opening six with a six foot par putt.  Unfortunately, that half point from Grem was all they could muster on the day, although the coveted team point went down the 12th and final hole before Spalding claimed it with a par.

The 3-4 pairing of Paul Schwing and Jimmy Workmeister also lost the team point, but Schwing rallied after losing the opening six and picked up an individual point by winning the "back six".  In the 5-6 group, Finn McGinnis won the front and the overall, while Ryan Camille earned a half point on the front six.

It all added up to a 17-4 loss that featured much better play from Calvert Hall than the score might otherwise indicate.

"We certainly didn't play our best," said Coach Drew Forrester afterwards, "but we didn't play to the tune of getting beat 17-4, either.  Four of the six front-six points weren't decided until the final hole there.  If we could have just holed one or two more putts in the opening six holes, we might have led at that point and who knows how things would have gone from that point?"

Calvert Hall takes their 4-1 mark into a Wednesday home match with McDonogh at CC of Maryland (3:15 pm).

"It's good we're getting right back after it on Wednesday," states Forrester.  "We'll be itching to get back out there and play well after the Spalding loss.  McDonogh's tough, though. We know all about them.  They're very capable of beating anyone on any given day.  We need to step it up and play better."
