Cardinals fall to Loyola on the road, 13-8

What started out as a promising day for the Calvert Hall golf team gave way to choppy, inconsistent play and the Cardinals dropped a 13-8 decision to Loyola on Wednesday afternoon at the Dons' home course, Hunt Valley Golf Club.

When senior Doug Grem rolled in a 10-foot par putt on hole #6, he secured the "front six" point to go with pairing partner Charles Carter's 2-up win over the first six holes.  Moments later, senior co-captain Paul Schwing won his front-six point, 1-up, and the Cardinals were up 3-1 early in the match.  That would be the last time Calvert Hall led, as Loyola won 4 of the 6 "back six" matches, with only Grem (win) and senior co-captain Kevin May (halved) avoiding a back six loss.  For the day, Grem was the only Cardinal to win his match, with Carter and May both playing their match to an "all square" tie.

"Full credit to Loyola, for starters," said Cardinals coach Drew Forrester after the defeat.  "They played hard.  They executed well around the greens.  They played better than we did."

Forrester noted his team's woes on the Hunt Valley putting surfaces as a main reason for the defeat.  "We didn't putt well...I guess that's an understatement," he explained.  "We talk about it a lot and try to practice it regularly, but putting is going to make us or break us.  Monday at Gilman, it made us.  That's how we won.  Today against Loyola, it broke us.  We'll just have to spend a lot more time on the greens over the next couple of weeks in preparation for the playoffs in May."

The Cardinals don't return to MIAA A-Conference action until Tuesday, May 5, when they host Mount Saint Joseph at Country Club of Maryland.  The next day, May 6, they conclude the regular season with a visit to the Baltimore Country Club's West Course to take on St. Paul's.

"We have a lot of work to do over the next three weeks," Forrester stated.  "There's so much room for improvement in our team, both individually and as a unit.  This is not the time to rest.  This is the time to knuckle down and work harder and try and get ready for the playoffs."
