Cardinals open season by defeating defending champs

The Cardinals varsity golf team got the 2019 A-Conference season off to a memorable start on Monday, April 1st with a 12.5 to 8.5 win over three-time defending champion St. Paul's.  The match was played at the Country Club of Maryland, Calvert Hall's home course.

Calvert Hall led 3.5 to 2.5 at the halfway point, then picked up the pace on the "back six", with each pairing earning valuable points down the stretch to seal the victory.

Harrison Silva '20 and Michael Crowley '20 each scored 1.5 points in their match against two high quality St. Paul's players.  Austin Steckler '20 and Lorenzo Sanz '22 swept all three available points in their match and the two also won the "team point" in convincing fashion.  Patrick Hurdle '19 and Matt Cover '20 came through over the final three holes, with Hurdle's par on #10 and Cover's par on #11 turning out to be decisive moments for Calvert Hall.

"I'm just so happy for them," Coach Forrester said afterwards.  "They worked hard all throughout January, February and March.  Fitness after school, practicing outside in cold temperatures.  They put in a lot of work.  This was a very justifiable reward for our team."

The win over St. Paul's marks the first CHC victory over the Crusaders since the 2015 campaign.

"We beat a very good team on Monday," Coach Forrester concluded.  "St. Paul's has won the title three years in a row.  To beat them, you have to play outstanding golf."
