Late rally lifts Cardinals to big road win over St. Joe

For the second time this season, the Cardinals fell behind early to a road opponent, but battled back with exceptional "back six" play to win, as Calvert Hall held off Mount Saint Joseph, 12.5-8.5, on Thursday, April 18 at Rolling Road Golf Club.

The match turned on two critical moments, both of which fell in favor of the Cardinals.  Junior Michael Crowley, fresh off his win in the MIAA Individual Championship on Wednesday, had his hands full on Thursday playing against St. Joe's #1 player.  At the final hole, a 555-yard par 5, Crowley unleased a 310 yard drive and then hit the green in two with a spectacular 3-wood.  His birdie at that hole gave Crowley a half-point on the "back six".

Austin Steckler came to that same 12th green needing to win the hole outright to secure not only 2.5 points in his individual match, but the "team point" was also at stake as the four players competed on the last hole of the day.  Steckler hit a perfect drive and terrific second shot, then left his third shot 20 feet left of the pin.  After Stecker's opponent had made bogey-six, the junior co-captain calmly rolled in a four foot par putt that gave him and Lorenzo Sanz 6.5 of 7 points in their pairing.

Sanz once again played solid golf, earning all three individual points.  Patrick Hurdle (1.5 points) and Josh Hubbard (3 points) also won the team point in their match.  Hubbard was outstanding in his 2019 debut, shooting the equivalent of 3-over par for 12 holes.

"The match came down to three things," Coach Forrester explains.  "Michael's birdie at 12, Austin's putt at 12, and the fact that two of our three groups won the team point.  If those three things don't happen, we lose.  We stress over and over to "stay in it" and that's exactly what we did today.  We hung in there, kept playing hard, kept trying to scratch out points and, in the end, we got enough points to win.  This was a big, big win for us.  Mount Saint Joe has a solid team.  Anytime you win on the road in the A-Conference, you've accomplished something special."

Coach Forrester also singled out Josh Hubbard's play.  "We were all so happy to see Josh get in there and play well.  That's what our team is all about.  Whomever we put in, we have trust they'll play well and secure some points."

The Cardinals are now 5-1 and in first place.  They'll next travel to Green Spring Golf Club on Monday, April 22 to take on McDonogh (2-2).
