In Memoriam of David Shannon

It is with great sorrow that Calvert Hall shares with you news regarding the passing on Monday, August 29, 2022, of former Calvert Hall faculty member, David Shannon.
Dave taught at Calvert Hall from 1966-2003. A true Renaissance man, Dave brought many talents to The Hall. He was a member of Social Studies department and served as the Defensive Coordinator for the Varsity Football team. He is also remembered for his theatrical skills and masterful portrayal of Ben Franklin and Scrooge in two Calvert Hall productions. For many years, he served as the school’s graduation cantor at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.

Louis Heidrick, AFSC, former Calvert Hall principal who worked with Dave throughout his career reflected, “Dave was an outstanding teacher, supportive colleague and a steady hand in the Social Studies department. He is well-remembered for the extensive pencil and paper spreadsheets on which he meticulously recorded student grades. Dave's teaching style encouraged student participation in class discussions… noting every comment.”

Reflecting on Dave as a coach, Joe Carlozo ’70 commented, “He could be tough as nails and extremely competitive, yet compassionate as anyone I knew. He loved “The Gun” and my neck still hurts when I think of it. He did his job for the love of the sport and for helping young boys to become men. We were so blessed to have him as a Coach.”
Dave is survived by his wife Judy, former Calvert Hall English faculty member and Theatre Director, daughters Mary Beth Stapleton, Marguerite Willbanks, Donna Kable, grandsons Gary Stapleton, Jr. ’03, David Stapleton ’15, Daniel Stapleton ’18, and granddaughter Shannon Stapleton.

A celebration of life is being currently being planned. Details to follow once they are made available.
