Bishop Newman was inducted into the Calvert Hall Alumni Hall of Fame in 1985. The Calvert Hall Alumni Association established a named scholarship in his honor. This scholarship provides support to current students while working on growing the fund to sustain the scholarship in perpetuity. Bishop Newman also co-chaired the successful "Calvert Hall Forever" capital campaign which included the construction of George Young Hall.
Well known for his athletic abilities, Bishop Newman played JV basketball and baseball his sophomore year and made the varsity team for both sports his junior and senior year. After graduating from The Hall, Bishop Newman was offered professional baseball opportunities; instead he chose to answer a higher call and entered the St. Charles Minor Seminary in Catonsville. Bishop Newman cites Father Henri Brianceau, a Sulpician priest who served as chaplain at Calvert Hall, in assisting him to choose the priesthood vocation. Bishop Newman was elevated to monsignor in 1965.
In 1967, Cardinal Lawrence Shehan, the archbishop of Baltimore, asked him to be superintendent of schools for the archdiocese. He held this position for nine years. In 1976 he returned to parish work, with appointments as pastor of SS. Philip and James, Baltimore (1976-1981), and rector of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, Baltimore (1981-1984).
Archbishop Borders had the pleasure of informing Bishop Newman in 1984 that Pope John Paul II, now a saint, had appointed him to be an auxiliary bishop of Baltimore. For nearly two decades, under Archbishop Borders and then Cardinal William H. Keeler, Bishop Newman oversaw the Eastern Vicariate, which included 65 parishes in Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Harford counties.
Brother John Kane FSC, Ed.D., President of Calvert Hall, shared, "All you had to do was be in Bishop Newman's presence to understand why our staff and alumni were always attracted to him. When you talked to him, he was focused on you, listening to you."
A view and wake will be held May 28 at a time to be determined at St. Mary's Seminary and University in Roland Park. Bishop Newman's funeral will be offered May 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of Mary of Queen in Homeland.
"There is no one to whom you cannot and should not try to be helpful by the example of your virutes."
