School Counseling

For most students, the high school years are a period of rapid personal change and development, often accompanied by stress and uncertainty. The program of the Guidance Department is designed primarily to help students to successfully meet the challenges that arise during these years.
  • Freshman Peer Education Advisory

The intent of the Peer Education Program is not to prescribe specific behaviors, but rather to encourage critical thinking and discussion among our students. The lessons challenge the attitudes that may result in risky decisions/behaviors and promote a consideration of the potential consequences and alternatives. In addition, the presence of peers as teachers provides a model of how to have constructive and thoughtful discussions on a variety of topics.
  • Sophomore Advisory

Sophomore Guidance builds upon the Freshman Peer Education course. Students meet every other cycle to discuss topics that are relevant to their academic or social life. Students start the year discussing goal setting and time management and then move on to topics about social media, drugs and alcohol and healthy relationships. The course ends with an introduction to college counseling and their college counselors. The course meets throughout the year and is built into every sophomore schedule.
  • Junior College Advising

This introductory course is meant to offer a baseline of information to help students navigate the college admissions process. Starting with asking why one would attend, other topics include:  developing a college list to visit, coaching the visit, reinforcing ACT or SAT prep, tools such as Naviance and collegeboard, writing a resume and writing the college application essay. The course is mandatory, does not need registration and will start in the second semester, meeting once per cycle for seven cycles.
  • Senior College Advising

Starting at the beginning of first semester senior year, this course walks students through application mechanics, Naviance procedures for sending transcripts and teacher recommendations, financial aid and the transition to college life. This course is mandatory, does not need registration and meets once per cycle for five cycles.
