Cards Open Season with dominant 40-5 win over Baltimore Poly

The Varsity Cards opened their 2013 season at home, under the lights and ready to move on from the 2012 season. Getting scoring tries from 4 different players, the 40-5 win over Baltimore Poly RFC was the 3rd consecutive season opener for the Cards.

The 2012 season was one of the most forgettable in Cardinal Program history. Enduring injuries to 11 different players including 6 season ending injuries, the 2012 Cards finished 0-6 in MIAA play and 3-9 overall. Needless to say, Coach Tom Fan and the Cards were ready to move on from the 2012 season.  "I just want Friday to get here, so we can start the season and turn the page. I think once we get on the field, with all the new faces, last year will be a distant memory." responded Coach Fan when asked about his team's prospects for the 2013 season.

It didn't take the Cards long to move past 2012. Senior Monte Kerney opened scoring with a 30 yard run 15 mins into the match. 3 mins later, junior Nick Auvil moved a pile of players to score his first try of the season. Junior Jake Soriano closed the Cardinal scoring in the first half with a powerful run through the Poly defense. Soriano would score another in the 2nd half and was a perfect 4 for 4 on conversion kicks. His 18 points scored paced the Cards. Monte Kerney would add his 2nd try of the season with a back-braking 80 yd run in the 2nd half. Senior Mike Frank closed out the Card's scoring binge with his own 15 yd run late in the 2nd half. Senior Chris Rothmann went 1-2 on conversion kicks as he took over kicking duties for Jake Soriano.

Despite being penalized over 15 times, the Cards controlled play throughout the match. Senior Zack Wojonowski won 8 lineouts for Cards as Junior Andrew Pribula consistently put the Cards in scoring position with strong kicks to touch.

The Cards stand at 1-0 and will return to action on March 16 (Sat) vs St. Johns (DC) in the Annual Brothers' Cup match. The Cards are a perfect 3-0 against St. Johns
