Calvert Hall Announces $1.35 Million Legacy Fund

Calvert Hall College High School is pleased to announce James Derwin ’60 and his spouse, Jane Bachner, have made a trust gift of $1,350,000. The James Derwin ’60 and Jane Bachner Legacy Fund will be designated to support the President’s Hardship Fund, Brother Daniel Henry, FSC Scholarship Endowment, and an unrestricted gift.
Brother John Kane, FSC, Ed.D.shared, “Jim Derwin and Jane Bachner have been wonderful supporters of Calvert Hall for many years. This legacy gift is an amazing reflection of their generosity and passion for Calvert Hall. They consistently express their gratitude for the blessings that they have received and believe in paying it forward. This gift will enable many students the opportunity to attend The Hall.”

A 1960 grad of Calvert Hall, James went on to earn a B.A. in Economics from King’s College and a Masters Degree from the University of New Hampshire. He then spent three years serving our country in the Army before joining the B&O Railroad. James worked for the railroad in various financial roles through the three mergers – B&O Railroad, Chessie Systems, CSX – until his retirement in September 2001.

Calvert Hall was influential on James’ life journey and provided a solid foundation. He shared, “The guidance of the Christian Brothers who taught me was subtle, but profound. My wife, Jane, and I continue to be impressed by its commitment to academic excellence and the welfare of its students. The success I’ve enjoyed was in no small way predicated on a Lasallian education, and for that, I’m very grateful. Jane and I are pleased to be able to give something back to the school which, after all, made it all possible.”

A legacy fund established with this financial commitment will be among the largest named scholarships at The Hall.
