Mr. Dave Hallman's Letter for the McMullen Newsletter
Dear McMullen Alumni, Friends, and Benefactors,
As we transition from one school year to another, it's bittersweet to say goodbye to the Class of 2023. Their Capstone topics ranged from interning with Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin at University of Maryland Medical Center to exploring cardiac xenotransplantation in the operating room to working with Dr. Angela Duckworth at the University of Pennsylvania to understand how grit can be used to improve health outcomes for patients battling cancer. Other seniors went a more creative route, making an original animated short film or a bench for our campus based on the principles of organic architecture and sustainable design.
The graduating class of McMullens turned in an impressive list of college acceptances and scholarships, too:
29 graduates earned $5.9 million in scholarships.
Students were accepted to many highly selective colleges, including Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, University of Virginia, Notre Dame, University of Michigan, Northwestern, Villanova, UCLA, Georgia Tech, UNC Chapel Hill, and Emory -- the list goes on.
Three seniors earned a Banneker/Key Scholarship to the University of Maryland, which covers tuition, room and board, and textbooks.
I am extremely proud of this group and will miss them dearly. They've left an indelible mark on the McMullen Program and on me, too.
I'd also like to share my gratitude with those of you who helped us with calling 8th graders to tell your story after their interviews. We had decided to be more selective in our admissions process by interviewing 20% less applicants than the previous year, and in spite of that, we ended up enrolling an even larger class of incoming McMullens! Many of them mentioned how your call positively impacted their decision. I have no doubt you helped make a difference in recruiting an elite group of McMullens, which also features two Knott Scholars -- more than any other all boys' school in the area -- bringing us to a total of 14 Knott Scholars across our entire Program.
I'm excited to hit the ground running with the Class of 2027 this fall in addition to rolling out new curricula for our Program's Rhetoric and Capstone courses. We'll be on the road for field trips again soon, too. If you're interested in hosting a group of McMullens at work, please let us know!
