Mr. Motley brings more than 30 years of educational leadership rooted in academic excellence, service, and a deep commitment to student success. Most recently, he served as Director of High Schools for the Howard County Public School System, overseeing 15 high schools and leading major district-wide initiatives in academic achievement, instructional leadership, and school improvement. Under his leadership, the system was recognized as the top-ranked school district in Maryland.

Its longstanding tradition of academic excellence, character formation, and brotherhood resonates deeply with my mission to lead with purpose and help young people grow intellectually, morally, and spiritually.”
Prior to his district-level role, Mr. Motley served as principal at several schools, including River Hill High School, Atholton High School, Glenwood Middle School, and Patuxent Valley Middle School, totaling 18 years in school leadership. He also served as an assistant principal for five years and began his career in the classroom as a French and Spanish teacher.
A strong advocate for inclusive and nurturing school environments, Mr. Motley is a board member of the National Parent Teacher Association, the American Federation of School Administrators, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. He also serves on the school board of his parish, Sacred Heart School in Glyndon, demonstrating his commitment to Catholic education.

I am very excited to welcome Robert Motley to the team as Vice Principal as we strategically realign our leadership team for the future. Robert is an experienced educational leader who is both locally respected and nationally recognized, with very high standards and a deep commitment to his Catholic faith. This is a great day for Calvert Hall, and I look forward to working with him!” Tom Fan will return to the classroom full-time this fall to pursue his passion for teaching.
Mr. Motley holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Language Education (French and Spanish) from the University of Maryland – College Park and a Master’s Degree in Elementary and Secondary Education Administration and Supervision from The George Washington University. He is currently ABD (All But Dissertation) for his Ph.D. in Instructional Leadership at Notre Dame of Maryland University.
