Art of Film Class

Course Description:

This course explores the history of film, tracing its evolution from the birth of photography and the earliest moving images, through the silent era and the Golden Age of Hollywood, to the diverse cinematic landscape of the 21st century. Students will gain a deep understanding of how technological innovations and artistic movements have shaped film over time. The course is intended to familiarize students with the artistic and technical merits of motion pictures.

Students will critically analyze films with particular attention to mise en scène, cinematography, editing, and narrative style. They will explore major movements, genres, and auteurs that define the Hollywood oeuvre and world cinema. By the end of the course, students will be able to speak knowledgeably about the evolution of film, analyze key stylistic and thematic trends, and make cogent arguments about the quality and significance of selected works. Students will become critical consumers of an art form too often regarded as mere popular entertainment.
