11 birdies not enough as Calvert Hall falls at Mt. St. Joe

Six Calvert Hall golfers combined for 11 birdies on the afternoon, but it wasn't enough to offset an outstanding performance from Mt. St. Joe as the Cardinals lost 16.5-4.5 in varsity golf action on Tuesday afternoon at Rolling Road GC.

The battle between the two unbeatens was highlighted by a birdie barrage from both teams.  All six CHC players recorded at least one, with senior Jake Hormes carding birdies at 3, 7 and 8 to lead the way.  Hormes earned a "front-six" draw with his MSJ opponent and teamed up with senior Ben Capone to earn a tie and a half-point in the coveted "team match" that is played out over 12 holes.  Capone was the high CHC point-getter for the afternoon, as he won the "back-six" and his match for two total points.

Grant Burton's 5-foot birdie putt at #6 gave the junior a front-six win and one point on the day, while Matt Muddiman made an outstanding par-4 at the same hole to earn a front-six tie and gain a half-point on the afternoon.

Senior co-captains Jimmy Grem and Nick Smearman played well enough on the day to draw plenty of praise from the large  gathering of CHC supporters who made the trip to Catonsville, but their MSJ opponents were just a little better and claimed all available points in the 1-2 match.

Sophomore Paul Schwing (39) and junior Ryan Bunch (40) played well in the 9-hole "alternates match", which doesn't count in the team scoring.

"This was a day where the final score doesn't really reflect how close the match was," says CHC head golf coach Drew Forrester.  "Mount Saint Joe deserved to win and hats off to them for fine play...but this was probably our second best performance of the season as a team and it turned out to be a loss.  That's how match play works, unfortunately.  You can play well and run into an opponent who plays just a little better and you wind up losing.  There are other days when maybe your form isn't great, but your opponent struggles along with you and it turns out to be a win."

Calvert Hall (3-1) returns to A-Conference action this Thursday, April 25 at 3:15 pm when they take on undefeated Archbishop Spalding (2-0) on the Cardinals' home course of Country Club of Maryland.

"It's good we have a match right away," says Forrester.  "It will give us a chance to put the Mount Saint Joe loss in the rear view mirror and get ready to host a very strong Spalding team."
