Four Cardinals play all three rounds of MIAA Individual Championship

Calvert Hall sent six golfers to the annual MIAA Individual Championship and four Cardinals completed the 54-hole event, which ended yesterday at historic Baltimore Country Club with Mount Saint Joseph's David Long winning the individual title.

Senior Jimmy Grem was the low CHC participant, shooting 231 for the tournament including a sparkling 73 in the second round at Maryland Golf and Country Club. Grem's fellow co-captain Nick Smearman posted Calvert Hall's low score in Monday's final round at BCC with 79, ending with 238. Sophomore Paul Schwing was perhaps CHC's most impressive performer over the 54-hole event.  Schwing qualified for the event through the team's "open qualifier" four days before the first round and promptly shot 82-79-82.  His final round play over a wet, long BCC East Course was even more eye opening when you consider he'd never seen the layout prior to Monday's round. Senior Ryan Howard, who is enjoying a return to the Cardinals line-up in 2013, also played all three rounds of the championship and fought gamely on Monday to post 83 and a 3-round total of 244.

Juniors Ryan Bunch and Grant Burton also qualfied for the event.  Bunch was "eliminated" after round one with an 85 while Burton failed to advance past the 2nd round after two rounds of 83-83.

"We had a very good representation of players in the Individual Championship," says CHC head golf coach Drew Forrester. "Three seniors, which you expect, plus two juniors and a sophomore.  And the fact that we had a team qualifier for four of the six spots means those four players really did earn their way into the field.  BCC was as tough of a test as our players will ever find in tournament golf.  You're talking about one of Maryland's best golf courses, in prime condition, with rain and long, wet rough.  It was a tremendous test for all of them and each of them handled it well."

The Cardinals now return to team action with three matches in the next nine days to close out the regular season.  This Wednesday at 3:15 pm, Calvert Hall travels to Suburban to take on a very good Boys' Latin team.  Next Monday, May 6, Calvert Hall will host Gilman, but the match will be played at Towson Golf and Country Club due to a scheduling conflict with CHC's home course.  And then, on May 9, the regular season ends with a home match against Loyola.

"We're 3-1-1, but there are a lot of good teams in the conference who can move up and down the standings over the next week and half," Forrester states. "We need to focus on Boys' Latin first.  They will be tough on their home course this Wednesday."
