What started as a promising afternoon of golf against a very strong Gilman squad turned out to be a disappointing loss for Calvert Hall as the Cardinals fell, 13-8, on Monday afternoon at Towson Golf and Country Club.
Calvert Hall won four of the six "front six" matches and looked to be in good shape heading to the final six hole matches, but only senior Ryan Howard - who won all 3 of his available points - and co-captain Jimmy Grem were able to secure a point on the "back six" as Gilman rallied for the win.
"It was a tale of two halves, so to speak," said CHC head golf coach Drew Forrester. "We played well on the front and got off to a nice, steady start. But the back-six as we call it wasn't kind to us. We made too many bogeys...and against a solid team like Gilman, you're going to pay the price if you can't make at least a par."
Junior Grant Burton won 2 of his 3 available points on the day. He was, along with Howard, the only Cardinal to win his 12-hole match.
Senior co-captain Nick Smearman and junior Matt Muddiman each won a point, earning a victory on the front-six.
In the 7-8 match, both Cameron Bell (shooting 39 for 9 holes) and Kevin May (41) played well. Bell halved his 9-hole match while May won his, 1-up.
The loss drops Calvert Hall into 4th place in the A-Conference at 4-2-1. Gilman improved to 5-1 with the win.
"We needed this one today. It just didn't happen for us," stated Forrester. "We need to re-group quickly and finish off the regular season with a win over Loyola on Thursday. Then, it's the playoffs next week. As I told the team after the loss to Gilman, sometimes it just works out that you have to do things a certain way to win. Look at the Ravens...they would have preferred to play at home last January in the playoffs, but they had to go to Denver and New England in order to get to the Super Bowl and that's what they did. We need to bounce back against Loyola and then we'll start focusing on the playoffs and a run to the championship. We'll play anyone, anywhere...wherever they tell us to play, we'll be there."
