The Varsity Basketball team fell in the Baltimore Catholic League Championship on Monday evening at UMBC. This was a closely fought battle the entire game and it was eventually settled in overtime by a score of 72-69. The Cardinals record dropped to 28-6. Calvert Hall came out of the gate quickly and gained a 6-0 advantage. They failed to secure several rebounds after that which enabled Mount Saint Joe to score a few quick baskets. On the offensive end, Calvert Hall did some good things but they failed to execute on several fast break opportunities in which they had the advantage. They also settled for long jumpers early in the shot clock that resulted in fast breaks for their opponent. Defensively, the team was pretty solid and they held a 4 point lead at the break. Calvert Hall turned the ball over on 5 of their first 7 possessions of the second half but played well on the defensive end and held on to slim lead. The fourth quarter was a great battle as the teams traded the lead back and forth. Several clutch plays down the stretch by The Hall enabled them to hold a slim 2 point with twenty seconds to go as MSJ had possession. Calvert Hall played great D and forced a long contested jumper and four to five players scrambled for the loose ball. A MSJ player threw up a shot with .02 seconds remaining and the whistle blew-a foul was called. Overtime. With the core knotted at 69, The Cardinals again played great defense for about 30 seconds but an oppononent got a three off that went in to gave them the lead with 13 seconds to play. Calvert Hall got a 3 off as the buzzer sounded but the ball bounded off the rim and it was over. A crushing defeat for a team that played like Champions and conducted themselves with a great deal of class after one of the toughest losses that this writer (only on this site)-player and Coach has ever been a part of in 40 years of basketball. The entire team should hold their heads high and look forward to playing in the prestigious Alhambra Tournament in a few weeks. Go Hall!!
