Brother John Kane, FSC, President of Calvert Hall announced a financial gift in excess of 1.5 million dollars by Mr. John Noppinger, Jr. ’64 to Calvert Hall College High School.
Mr. Noppinger is making two gifts to Calvert Hall. The first is a capital gift that will establish the John G. Noppinger, Jr. Commons. The second gift establishes the John G. Noppinger, Jr.’64 Endowed Chair for Faculty LeadershipThe Commons will adapt our current boardroom and adjacent courtyard space at the entrance of the school into an open commons area where students can study, collaborate, and meet.  The Commons will be a multi-purpose space for students during the day and for many different groups and meetings in the evening.  In addition to the capital gift, a second gift will establish the first Endowed Chair at Calvert Hall.  The first recipient of this award will be Mr. Augie Miceli.  Mr. Miceli arrived to Calvert Hall with Mr. Noppinger in 1960 and has taught mathematics at Calvert Hall for the past 54 years.  Mr. Miceli is an iconic Calvert Hall teacher, former coach and athletic director.

In speaking about his gift, Mr. Noppinger said, “This is a wonderful way to help these young men expand their education at Calvert Hall.  I got a lot from Calvert Hall because of the diversity that existed when I went to school here and that still exists today.  Calvert Hall afforded a structure and a discipline, as well as a great education, that led me to be successful.”  Mr. Noppinger indicated that the most important consideration of the gift was that “I want to develop a legacy.  This gift will live on well beyond my own years for the benefit of the young men who walk these halls today and who will continue to do so for many years to come.”

Brother John Kane, FSC, President of Calvert Hall, remarks that, “Today is a great day for Calvert Hall.  We have been extremely blessed by the loyalty of many of our alumni.  Today John Noppinger’s generosity will allow us to grow the Lasallian mission that has been alive at Calvert Hall since 1845.  We believe that this gift and the establishment of the John G Noppinger Commons will help to enhance the already existing collegiate atmosphere at Calvert Hall. The Commons will allow students to pursue their academic goals in a beautiful new space on our campus that will benefit so many for years to come.”

Principal Charles Stembler ’83, adds, “We are grateful to Mr. Noppinger for his support and vision to not only create a unique student space, but also for his commitment to teaching excellence through the Endowed Chair.  He is a great example to our students of someone who is willing to give back to his Alma Mater.”

Mr. Noppinger was born and raised in Baltimore.  His family moved to Lutherville where he was able to attend Calvert Hall in its first year on the Towson Campus during the fall of 1960.  At Calvert Hall, he studied business and entered the workforce upon graduating in 1964.  Mr. Noppinger spent much of his business life living  in the Houston, Texas area but traveled extensively around the United States, Europe, and the Middle East for business.  After more than 20 years away, he returned to Baltimore to care for his ailing parents.  Mr. Noppinger worked as a branch manager with a background in bookkeeping, mainly with construction and industrial clients and those within oil related industries.  Mr. Noppinger credits learning many life skills from his father who spent his life as an attorney and CPA.  In November of 2013, he established the John G. Noppinger, Jr. ‘64 Scholarship to provide financial assistance for deserving Calvert Hall students.  His wife of 20 years, Lucy, a native of Baltimore is in her 48th year as business administrator of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation in downtown Baltimore.
