Calvert Hall got points from five of six players and each of the two-man pairings picked up valuable "team points" as the Cardinals improved to 3-0 on the young golf season with a 15-6 victory over previously unbeaten St. Paul's on Wednesday, April 1st at Country Club of Maryland in Towson.
Senior captains Kevin May and Paul Schwing played outstanding in halving the team-point with St. Paul's talented 1-2 playing combination, while Schwing also picked up two individual points by winning the "front six" and the overall 12-hole point.
In the 3-4 pairing, junior Charles Carter swept his opponent, earning all three points, while senior Jimmy Workmeister continued his fine early season play by winning 2.5 points. Carter-Workmeister also won the coveted "team point".
Doug Grem (2.5 points) and Ryan Camille (2 points) also won their team point, as Grem has now collected three straight individual wins to start his senior campaign. Sophomore Camille, who made his varsity golf debut on Monday in a win at Mount Saint Joseph, has won both of his matches as well.
"It sounds like a cliché but it's not...we beat a VERY good St. Paul's team today," said Cardinals golf coach Drew Forrester after the victory. "We talked before the match, as a team, about the importance of playing well. You can't win if you don't play well. Somedays, you play well and it might not go your way, but rarely do you ever win by NOT playing well. We knew we had to have a good day -- maybe even a great one -- to beat St. Paul's."
Forrester noted the team's play off the tee as a major reason for success. "We hit 70% of the fairways on Wednesday, which put us in great shape to play smart approach shots into those tricky Country Club of Maryland greens. It's something we've talked about and stressed in the stats we keep from every match. You're usually in every hole with a chance to win it if you start off by hitting the fairway."
Calvert Hall is the first team to reach the 3-0 mark in the A-Conference this season and they now lead the Black Division, with St. Paul's (2-1) in second, followed by Loyola (0-2) and Mount Saint Joseph (0-2).
The Cardinals are off until next Thursday, April 9, when they host Boys' Latin at 3:15 pm at Country Club of Maryland.
