January 25 - Day 0
Click here to hear a bit about our travel day yesterday from Ben McMcullen & Jackson Lynch...
Ben McMullen: Yesterday was an exciting day. It was the day that the trip finally felt real and not something we just said we were going to do. Our day started in darkness; we arrived in the cold and said our goodbyes. Once we got to the airport the energy was high and we were excited to leave and start something new. The beginning of the day at the airport and our first flight went smoothly. After landing in Denver, we had to make our connection flight which was set for 45 minutes after we landed which created some chaos amongst the group. A saying Ms. Fasy used was, "If you see me running, you know you also better be running." We crossed the entire Denver airport in 10 minutes, just to find out our flight was delayed. We spent about an hour hanging out, eating food, passing a rugby ball and just doing anything to pass the time. After landing in Great Falls, later than we were supposed to, we collected our bags but then there was an issue with the rental cars, continuing our delay. Once we got the cars, we had our sights on getting food. We decided on a pizza parlor, that only did carry out. We only knew they did carry out once we got there, so we had to find a place to get out of the cold. By now it was 6pm, dark and snowing. We sat in a local Chinese Restaurant for maybe 30 minutes before we got kicked out for not buying anything. As a final resort, we took the pizza, opened the trunk of the rental and ate together, outside in 10-degree weather. After some convincing, we were allowed to go to the local Walmart and sit in their lobby. While at the Walmart, we grabbed the food we would be needing for the entire week. There was food and luggage packed in every square inch of the car, going as high as the roof. After an already eventful day, we drove another 2 hours out to our bunkhouse, with music playing on full volume. Arriving at the bunkhouse, everyone was tired. By this point, we had been traveling for about 22 hours. We had an orientation about the rules and operation of the bunkhouse from a brother before deciding it was time to go to bed. From the day, I found the most impactful moments was all the time I got to spend with the guys. Since everything was new, it didn't matter what situation we found ourselves in, it was always a good time.
Jackson: One thing that stood out to me on our travel day was how much everyone got to know one another. Even before we handed in our phones, talking to the guys in the airport, on the plane, and in the car was truly something special. I could feel the Holy Spirit present in the moment through our leaders on this trip and the atmosphere around us. It's truly a different kind of feeling to be outside of "society," or the place we call home, with guys you can trust and lean on in hard situations. I know that each of these guys are here for one another and that makes all the difference. It showed me that even when you can be nervous to leave behind the things at home and you miss the people closest to you, it means a lot to get to talk to the people on this trip who are going through something similar. Everyone brings their own challenges and strengths, and I can't wait to see how this week unfolds. I know that through this whole experience, God is walking through it with us and watching over us closely. He is teaching us and shaping us into his image everyday of this trip. That means facing easy tasks and difficult tasks. I know that through it all, God has a plan for everyone on this trip to be successful the way He sees fit. I feel so blessed to spend this week with the people I trust, and to lead in a way that I've never had to lead before, which is something truly special.
