Varsity Basketball had an important late season victory over the Glenelg Country School Dragons.
As the season passes, the Calvert Hall Varsity Basketball team, the Cardinals, accumulate their experiences from the matches and start to get back on the track. In some previous competitions, the Cardinals did not perform perfectly. However, the members of the team are doubtlessly tough athletes. As Coach Dereck, the coach of JV basketball team, winning 19 games of the season already, states, “They started slowly and lost some good guys, but recently they are picking it up.” On February 9, 2018, the Cardinals defeated Glenelg Country School by their dynamic offensive plays. In the first quarter of the match, Calvert Hall was suppressed by the guests. The team from Glenelg Country School, the Dragons, has a tall and powerful center who frustrates Cardinals’ attacks. On the other hand, Cardinals are lack of defenses. As Brother Leonard, an honest fan of Varsity Basketball, states, “They need to play consistently. They must avoid turnovers.” The first quarter ends at the advantage of the Dragons. However, in the second quarter, the shooting guard of the Cardinals, Brendan Adams, efficiently utilizes the opportunity of offenses. With his fast, skillful dribbling and accurate three-point shots, Brendan reduces the gap of team scores, provides the possibility for Cardinals’ comeback. Besides, Darrius Tilghman, the captain, demonstrates his advanced physical strength and overall athleticism, breaks the guards and assists Brendan for another beautiful layup. Montez McNeil, Cardinals’ second-best shooter, also makes significant contributions with a three-point shots and a couple jumpers. After the discussion of strategies during the half-time interval, the Cardinals decide to keep focusing on offensives. In the middle of the third quarter, Kevin Collier, the center, with a jump shot, catches up to Glenelg and allows the Cardinals to take the lead. Cardinals’ continuous attacks drive the opponents out of their ration. The Dragons start to make more fouls which allows Logan Curtis, Cardinals’ small forward, to score couple accurate free-throws. After the Cardinals start winning, they soon shift their tactics to a slower play style. With leisurely dribbling, they drag the time until the end of the game. Finally, the Cardinals gain their valuable victory. The match against Glenelg Country School shows the advanced skills, unbelievable stamina, and wonderful cooperation of the Varsity team. This season of basketball reveals a process of Cardinals keep improving themselves. Such victory will not be temporary; the Cardinals have greater ambitions. As Brendan states after the match, “Of course, victory feels great, but we got to win the next three to get a spot in the playoffs.” The step of the Cardinals will not stop here. More attentions and supports shall be given to them. With the Calvert Hall community holding their back, the Varsity Basketball team will finish the season with no regret.
