St. Johns (DC) wins Brothers; Cup for the first time in 5 years
Using a late score in the final 5 mins, St. Johns (DC) was able to post a 29-24 victory over the home Cards. The victory was the first in the last five years for St. Johns.
As in years past, the annual Brothers' Cup was another close match between evenly matched CHC & St. Johns. Despite scores from 4 different players the Cards could not hold onto the lead, as St. Johns scored 3 straight times in the 2nd half. The Cardinal team which features 15 juniors and 3 sophmores demosntrate their inexperience early on as the Cavaliers scored 3 minutes into the match. A run scoring try from Senior Kyle Mitchell evened the score and brought the Cards to life. Junior Steve Gercken's quick tap off a St. Johns penalty gave the Cards a 10-5 lead as the 1st half ended.
The 2nd Half looked very promissing for the Cards, as juniors Pete Duca & Jake Soriano each found the try zone. Duca scored off a beautiful feed from senior Mike Frank who single handly moved the cards from their own 35 into St. Johns territory. Jake Soriano scored his 3rd try on the year by looping behind Mike Frank for a 25 yard run in which he outsprinted the St. Johns defense. Unfortunately, St. Johns found 2nd life as the Cardinal penalities piked up allowing St. Johns excellent field position and the opportunity to set up the scoring pieces with runs by their props. After going up 29-25, the defense of St. Johns withstood a urgent and feverish offensive drive by the Cards that stalled at the St. Johns 15yd line. A late penalty allowed St. Johns to end the match with possession.
Calvert Hall leads the all-time series 5-1 and will now need to travel to DC to try and reclaim the Cup in 2014.
