CHC defeats MSJ 27-12 for 1st MIAA win

Taking an eraly against MIAA rival Mt. St. Joes, the Varsity Cards held on for a 27-21 victory. Scoring for the Cards were Juniors Nick Auvil and Seniors Cyril Thames-Plummer, Adam Carpenter and Parker Brown. Junior Jake Soriano added 7 points by going 2 for 4 on conversion kicks and 1 for 1 on penalty kicks. The Cards stand at 1-1 in the MIAA and 2-2 overall. They travel next to perennial Top 10 team, West Shore United on April 5
Hoping to erase last year's 0-6 record in the MIAA, the Varsity Cards were in desperate need for a win against MIAA rival Mt. St. Joes. Junior Nick Auvil put the Cards up early 8 mins in by taking the lineout feed from Senior Zach Wojnowski and running untouched in the try zone. The Cards missed two more opportunities to score until Senior Adam Carpenter picked up a MSJ turnover in the try zone to give the Cards a 12-0 lead. 

After MSJ closed out scoring in the 1st half with consecutive scores to take a 14-12 at the half.  MSJ picked up in the 2nd half the moemntum they had adding an eraly score to take a commanding 21-12 lead.  The game was nothing but lost chances, as the Cards missed consecutvie opportunities to score. Untimely penalities stalled Cardinal scoring drives until Senior Cy Thames Plummer picked up his first score of the season with an 8 man pick up from a Calvert Hall scrum about 20 meters out. Plummer's run finished in the corner of the try zone giving Junior Jake Soriano the most difficult conversion in the game. Soriano's miss put the score at 17-21 CHC. Soriano would later convert a 35 yard penalty kick to bring the score to 21-20 MSJ. Things held that way until the final 8minutes when Senior Parker Brown was reentered as an injury sub and quickly picked up a scoring run from 5 meters out. Using a MSJ penalty, the Cards set up a scoring drive from 20 meters out. Junior Steve Gercken carefully orchastrated the Cardinal drive to move the ball to the Gael 5 meters. Brown followed the lead of Cy Plummer and picked up a loose ball to score the try. Soriano's conversion gave the Cardinals a 27-21 lead with 6min remaining.

The Gael turned another missed scoring try by the Cardinals into a 30 yard drive putting them in Cardinal territory. Senior Kyle Mitchell made the hit of the night, dropping the MSJ Fly Half and jarring the ball loose and recovered by Junior Grant Howe. A series of turnovers allowed CHC to restart the match with their own scrum on the Gael 40 yrd line. Reconginzing the situation and that time had experied. The Cards won the scrum and punted the ball out of bounds to end the game.

The 27-21 victory evneed the Cardinals record in the MIAA and set up a showdown for 1st place with defending MIAA champs, Archbishop Spalding on April 11.  Sophomore Prop Ed Harris and junior Scrum Half Steve Gercken were named Men of the Match.
